By 2050 the world's population is expected to grow to nearly 9 billion while the ratio of arable land to population continues to decrease. Hydroponics, is a method of growing plants in a water based, nutrient rich solution without the use of soil. The root system is supported using an inert medium such as per-lite, rock wool, clay pellets or vermiculite.
